Apple Watch Series 12
The Apple Watch Series 12 saves its upgrades for the inside: a new Health Sensing System, smarter Siri and more than two days of battery, all at an unchanged $399. It's familiar outside but meaningfully better within.
Pros
- + New Health Sensing System with more frequent heart rate readings
- + Readiness score and Vitals app give a rich daily health picture
- + More than two days of battery life in testing
- + Ceramic Shield 2 brings tougher glass to the aluminum model
- + Starting price unchanged at $399
- + Wide choice of materials, including returning ceramic
Cons
- − Design is essentially identical to the Series 11
- − Minor heart rate inaccuracies noted in testing
- − Some new features exclusive to new hardware, limiting value for recent-model owners
- − Weak upgrade case for Series 11 owners
On first glance you'd be forgiven for mistaking the Apple Watch Series 12 for last year's Series 11. The design is essentially unchanged, so anyone hoping for a fresh look will be disappointed. The interesting story here is under the glass. Apple has replaced the previous sensor array with a new Health Sensing System that promises more frequent and more accurate readings. PCMag reports heart rate sampling every five seconds.
That shift makes the Series 12 feel like a watch built for people who actually use their smartwatch as a health and fitness tool. It suits iPhone owners who care about Readiness scores, overnight vitals and sleep trends. Owners of much older Apple Watches should also take note, since several new sensor-driven features reportedly won't come to earlier models. Those upgrading from a Series 11 have a tougher decision, because the gains are real but largely invisible.
We think the Series 12 is a smart, incremental upgrade that puts its effort in the right places. Holding the starting price at $399 for the 42mm aluminum model helps, because buyers get more watch for the same money.
- Health tracking is the headline. The new sensing system, the Readiness score and the Vitals app (heart rate, respiratory rate, wrist temperature, sleep duration and HRV) make this Apple's most health-focused mainstream watch yet. PCMag did note minor heart rate inaccuracies, so the accuracy promise isn't entirely delivered in testing.
- Battery life has crossed a meaningful threshold. PCMag measured roughly 54.5 hours, which comfortably clears two days. For a full-featured Apple Watch, that changes how often you think about charging.
- Durability gets a welcome bump on the cheapest model. Ceramic Shield 2 now comes to the aluminum version for the first time. Apple says it is 60% tougher than the Ion-X glass it replaces, which matters most on the model people tend to treat roughly.
- More choice in materials. Ceramic returns alongside aluminum and titanium in two case sizes, giving buyers a genuine range of styles.
- Siri powered by Apple Intelligence is pitched as more personal and conversational. It's a promising direction for a device where voice is the natural input, though the supplied information doesn't let us judge how well it performs day to day.
On the downside, the unchanged exterior makes this a hard sell for Series 11 owners. Exclusive features locked to new hardware may leave owners of recent models feeling short-changed. Our rating reflects a well-rounded watch with meaningful internal gains, held back slightly by the lack of design change and the modest accuracy caveats noted in testing.
