U-tec Ultraloq Bolt Fingerprint Matter Smart Lock

A smart deadbolt with an excellent, fast fingerprint reader and Matter-over-Thread support, held back by a loud motor, no built-in Wi-Fi, and missing Apple Home Key.

3.5 / 5

Pros

  • + Fast, excellent fingerprint reader
  • + Matter over Thread support for cross-ecosystem smart homes
  • + Many unlock options: fingerprint, keypad, app, Apple Watch, auto unlock, physical key
  • + Relatively simple four-screw installation

Cons

  • − No built-in Wi-Fi; remote access needs a separate $50 bridge
  • − Motor reported as loud, grinding and whining
  • − No NFC Apple Home Key support
  • − Replaceable rather than rechargeable batteries
  • − Some setup trouble reported

The Ultraloq Bolt Fingerprint Matter is U-tec's first lock with Matter support, launched at CES 2025 as a refresh of the earlier U-Bolt Pro. Its headline feature is the fingerprint reader, which reviewers consistently describe as fast and excellent. That matters most on a front door, where you want to walk up and get in without fumbling for a phone or a key.

This lock is best suited to smart-home users who already have a Thread network and want a Matter-compatible deadbolt that works across ecosystems. It also offers plenty of ways in: fingerprint, keypad code, smartphone app, Apple Watch, auto unlock, or a physical key. Buyers who expect plug-and-play Wi-Fi out of the box, or who care about a quiet door, should read the caveats below first.

On the core job of unlocking your door quickly, this lock does well. The fingerprint reader is its strongest asset. Installation is also reasonably approachable, needing only four screws, though PCWorld did report some trouble during setup. Matter over Thread is a welcome step for U-tec and makes the lock a more future-proof choice for mixed-platform smart homes.

The compromises are real, though:

  • No built-in Wi-Fi. The lock talks over Bluetooth and Thread. Remote access without a Thread setup means buying the separate $50 Ultraloq Bridge Wi-Fi Adaptor. U-tec has said a variant with both Wi-Fi and Thread is coming, so some buyers may want to wait for it.
  • A noisy motor. PCWorld found it loud, grinding and whining, and judged it too loud for most homes. This is one reviewer's finding, but it is a hard thing to live with on a door you use every day.
  • Missing conveniences. There is no NFC Apple Home Key support, and it runs on replaceable batteries rather than a rechargeable pack.

We don't have confirmed pricing, so we can't judge value. Our assessment rests on a limited set of verified claims rather than broad testing data. Overall, this is a capable lock with a standout fingerprint reader, but the motor noise and the extra cost of the Wi-Fi bridge keep it from being an easy recommendation.
