Schlage Sense Pro Smart Deadbolt
The Schlage Sense Pro delivers genuinely fast, reliable UWB hands-free unlocking and a clean keyless design, but its $399 price, Apple-only hands-free support and setup quirks temper the appeal.
Pros
- + UWB hands-free unlocking reported as faster and more reliable than geofencing or Bluetooth auto-unlock
- + Direction- and motion-aware unlocking only triggers when you reach the door
- + Apple Home Key support for iPhone and Apple Watch
- + Matter-over-Thread plus Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC connectivity
- + Clean, minimal design with a keypad that appears on tap
- + Up to 250 access codes
- + USB-C emergency power and Bluetooth backup
Cons
- − Expensive at $399
- − Hands-free unlocking is Apple-only for now; Android support via Aliro is still pending
- − Reviewers noted setup and software limitations
- − Matter ecosystem is still maturing
- − No physical keyhole, which may concern some buyers
- − BHMA Grade 2 rather than Grade 1
- − Runs on AA batteries rated for up to nine months
The Schlage Sense Pro is the brand's most ambitious smart lock yet. It is Schlage's first deadbolt with Ultra Wideband (UWB) hands-free unlocking, its first to support Matter-over-Thread, and its first with no physical keyhole. The result is a strikingly minimal front: apart from a subtle Schlage logo, the keypad only appears when you tap the lock.
The headline feature is Schlage Converge, which uses UWB to track your speed, direction and motion so the door unlocks only when you actually reach it, not when you wander past or pull into the driveway. Combined with Apple Home Key support for iPhone and Apple Watch, this lock is clearly aimed at Apple households that want a truly hands-free front door and are willing to pay a premium for it.
Android users should be cautious. Hands-free unlocking is Apple-only for now. Google and Samsung support is expected through Aliro, but there is no timeline in the information available to us.
On the strength of the reporting we reviewed, the Sense Pro's core promise holds up. Reviewers consistently found UWB unlocking faster and more dependable than the geofencing and Bluetooth auto-unlock approaches that have long made hands-free entry feel unreliable. That alone sets it apart from most smart locks on the market.
The supporting features are sensible:
- Up to 250 access codes is generous for families, rentals or frequent guests.
- USB-C emergency power and Bluetooth backup address the obvious worry about going keyless.
- Thread, Wi-Fi, NFC and Matter support give it broad smart-home reach.
There are real drawbacks, though:
- At $399 it is an expensive lock.
- Its BHMA Grade 2 rating is respectable but not top tier for the price.
- Battery life is quoted at up to nine months on four AA cells, so expect periodic swaps.
- GearBrain, which otherwise rated it highly, flagged setup and software limitations and a Matter ecosystem that is still maturing.
Removing the keyhole is also a commitment. The emergency power option mitigates this, but some buyers will simply prefer a mechanical fallback.
Our verdict: for Apple-centric homes, this is one of the most compelling smart locks available, and the UWB experience is a real step forward rather than a gimmick. For everyone else, the price and the platform limits make it harder to recommend until Aliro support arrives.
