Level Lock Pro
The Level Lock Pro is the most discreet way to get a Matter and Apple Home Key smart lock on your door, but at $349 with remote access and a keypad costing extra, it is a premium choice for design-led homes.
Pros
- + Smart hardware hidden inside the door, so it looks like a standard deadbolt
- + Matter over Thread for broad smart home compatibility
- + Apple Home Key support for tap-to-unlock
- + Built-in door state detection via a magnetic strike plate
- + Simple installation with no chiseling, about 15 minutes
- + Battery life of about a year
Cons
- − Expensive at $349
- − Remote access needs a Level Connect bridge or a third-party Thread border router
- − Keypad is a paid add-on
- − No biometric unlocking
- − Only two finish options
The Level Lock Pro keeps Level's signature trick of hiding the smart hardware inside the door, so from the outside it looks like an ordinary deadbolt. For anyone who has winced at the bulky plastic housings on most smart locks, that alone makes it stand out. Level claims a profile 62% smaller than most smart locks, and the whole design philosophy is about the lock disappearing rather than announcing itself.
The lock also has a modern feature set. Matter over Thread lets it work across multiple smart home ecosystems, Apple Home Key support means iPhone and Apple Watch owners can tap to unlock, and a new magnetic strike plate adds built-in door state detection, so the lock can tell you whether the door is actually closed. Installation reportedly works like a standard deadbolt, with no chiseling and about 15 minutes with a screwdriver.
It is best suited to homeowners, especially those in the Apple ecosystem or running a Thread-capable smart home, who care about how their front door looks and are willing to pay for it. Shoppers who want a keypad, fingerprint unlocking, or remote access out of the box should look closely at the extras before buying.
At $349, the Level Lock Pro asks a lot, and much of what you pay for is the design. On that front it delivers. No other approach we know of hides a smart lock this completely, and adding door sensing and Home Key makes this the most capable invisible lock Level has offered. Matter over Thread is the right connectivity bet for longevity and cross-platform compatibility, and an upgraded processor is said to make it more responsive.
The caveats are real, though:
- Remote access is not self-contained. To control the lock away from home you need a bridge such as Level Connect or a third-party Thread border router. Many Apple, Google, and Amazon households already have one. If you don't, budget for it.
- The keypad costs extra. On a lock at this price, paying more for code entry is hard to like. There are no biometric options at all.
- Batteries last about a year. That is reasonable, but the hidden design means you rely on app alerts rather than visible cues.
We have not tested the lock long term, so our assessment rests on the reported feature set and the hands-on impressions in our sources rather than on months of daily use. On paper, it is a polished, forward-looking smart lock with a design nothing else matches. It loses points for its high price and for charging extra for things some rivals include. If aesthetics and ecosystem flexibility top your list, it is easy to recommend. If value or keypad convenience matters more, there are cheaper ways to get a smart deadbolt.
