Homey Pro Mini Review: Local Smart Home Control at Half the Price

The Homey Pro Mini delivers local-first Matter, Thread and Zigbee control with no subscription for $199.99, and it's far friendlier to set up than Home Assistant — as long as you can live with Ethernet-only networking and a trimmed app list.

4.0 / 5$199.99

Pros

  • + Roughly half the price of the $400 Homey Pro
  • + Matter, Thread and Zigbee supported out of the box
  • + Local-first processing keeps automations running during internet outages
  • + No subscription required for core features, remote access or voice control
  • + Works with Alexa, Google Assistant and Siri
  • + Setup and app reported as far simpler than Home Assistant
  • + Homey Flow automations, energy monitoring, alerts and local or cloud backups included

Cons

  • − No Wi-Fi — must be connected by Ethernet, limiting placement
  • − Z-Wave, Bluetooth, 433MHz and infrared require a separate Homey Bridge
  • − Half the RAM and a smaller supported app count than the full Homey Pro
  • − Only available in black
  • − LG's acquisition of Homey leaves some uncertainty over the platform's future

Homey's strategy with the Pro Mini is easy to read: take the $400 Homey Pro, halve the price, halve the RAM, trim the app catalogue, and see how many people notice. On paper it's a compelling trade. At $199.99 you get a local-first hub speaking Matter, Thread and Zigbee natively, with no subscription gate on core automations, remote access, or Alexa, Google Assistant and Siri voice control — an increasingly rare combination in a category where recurring fees have become the norm.

The catch is connectivity of a more mundane sort. There's no Wi-Fi at all; the Mini has to sit next to a router or a wired drop via Ethernet. That's genuinely limiting when the whole point of a Thread and Zigbee hub is to place it centrally in the home for the best radio coverage. Z-Wave, Bluetooth, 433MHz and infrared aren't built in either, and recovering them means buying a separate Homey Bridge, which erodes the price advantage for anyone with a legacy gear collection.

This is a hub for someone building a modern, standards-based smart home from a reasonably clean slate — Matter and Zigbee devices, a wired network point to spare, and no appetite for the weekend-project energy that Home Assistant demands. Tinkerers with a decade of mixed-protocol kit should be budgeting for the Bridge or looking at the full-size Pro.

What tips this into recommendable territory is the software. Reviewers consistently describe setup and the Homey app as intuitive and dramatically simpler than Home Assistant, and the Flow automation system, energy monitoring, real-time alerts and local-or-cloud backups add up to a platform that feels complete rather than stripped. The local-first processing matters too: automations that keep firing when the broadband drops are the difference between a smart home and an expensive lighting failure.

The compromises are real but mostly honest. Half the RAM of the Pro and a smaller supported app count sound alarming until you accept that most households run a handful of integrations; reviewers who tested it say the catalogue covers typical homes. The Ethernet-only requirement is the harder pill, and it's a design decision rather than a cost saving you can work around. I'd also flag LG's acquisition of Homey as a genuine unknown — platform direction after a buyout is never guaranteed, and a hub is a multi-year purchase.

  • Buy it if: you want private, local, subscription-free automation and a hub you can set up in an evening.
  • Skip it if: you rely on Z-Wave or IR today, or have nowhere sensible to plug in an Ethernet cable.

Four stars. The value proposition is strong and the software reputation is deserved, but the missing Wi-Fi and the Bridge-shaped hole in protocol support keep it from a clean sweep.
