Native Model Context Protocol (MCP) Server Integration
Home Assistant 2026.10 introduces native Model Context Protocol (MCP) server support, enabling AI agents like ChatGPT and Claude to view device states and directly control smart home equipment.
Through this integration, Home Assistant can expose over 2,000 built-in integrations to AI agents locally, functioning without the need for a subscription fee.
MCP Setup, Authentication, and Connectivity Requirements
Configuration is handled through a new AI settings interface, which provides a one-click setup process that generates a copyable server URL for AI clients. The integration operates via the /api/mcp endpoint and supports authentication using either access tokens or OAuth.
By default, the Model Context Protocol Server integration enables the "Expose all LLM APIs" setting and requires an administrator account to access the endpoint. Additionally, if cloud-based AI agents are used, the Home Assistant instance must be accessible over the internet through Home Assistant Cloud or another remote access method.
Additional 2026.10 Features and Upcoming Changes
Alongside MCP support, Home Assistant 2026.10 includes several platform updates:
- A dedicated user interface for managing automation trigger IDs
- A transition to OpenStreetMap vector maps
- A new Modbus connection panel
Looking forward, Home Assistant Cloud is planned to be rebranded as Home Assistant Link beginning with the upcoming December release.
