Google Home Speaker (2026) Review
Google's first speaker in six years is a handsome, punchy $100 smart speaker let down by a half-baked Gemini assistant and the quiet disappearance of Google's cheaper options.
Pros
- + Strong, room-filling sound with real bass for a speaker this small
- + 360-degree dispersion and three far-field mics suit open-plan rooms
- + Handsome, button-free mesh design with a subtle base light ring; four good colors
- + Doubles as a Matter and Thread smart home controller
- + Can be stereo-paired or used as audio output for the Google TV Streamer
- + Louder with more bass than a HomePod mini at a comparable price
Cons
- − Gemini for Home is slow, unreliable and clearly unfinished
- − Some Gemini features require a Google Home subscription
- − Sounds worse than the Nest Audio it replaces, which had a dedicated tweeter and larger woofer
- − Kills off the $49 tier — Google's cheapest speaker now costs twice as much
- − Power cable isn't removable from the speaker and isn't color-matched
- − Doesn't compete with larger speakers such as the Sonos Era 100
After roughly six years without a new smart speaker, Google has returned with something that looks and feels considered: a compact mesh-wrapped puck with no visible buttons, a soft light ring around the base and four colorways that are genuinely pleasant rather than merely inoffensive. It's the first speaker Google has built around Gemini, and at $99.99 it is now the entry point to Google's audio lineup — there is nothing cheaper.
That last part matters more than the hardware does. This single product replaces both the Nest Audio and the Nest Mini, which means anyone who used to buy a $49 Mini for a hallway or a spare bedroom now pays double. The Google Home Speaker is aimed squarely at people already invested in the Google Home ecosystem who want one good-sounding speaker per room, ideally paired in stereo or bolted onto a Google TV Streamer for better living-room audio. Its Matter and Thread support also makes it a reasonable hub for anyone building out a smart home rather than just playing music.

As a piece of hardware, this is an easy recommendation. The single 58mm driver with 360-degree dispersion does far more than its size suggests, and the reported gap over a HomePod mini — louder, with noticeably more bass — is significant enough to settle a purchase decision for anyone choosing between the two. It holds its own against Amazon's similarly priced Echo Dot Max. What it does not do is beat the Nest Audio it replaces, which had a dedicated tweeter and a larger woofer; that's a step backwards dressed up as a refresh, and it's the kind of regression that's hard to forgive when the price hasn't come down.
The bigger problem is the software the whole product is named after. Gemini for Home is impressively conversational when it works — it understands loose, natural phrasing far better than the old Assistant did — but it is reportedly slow and inconsistent, and some of its capabilities sit behind a Google Home subscription. Buying a $100 speaker whose headline feature is both unfinished and partly paywalled is a leap of faith, and we'd rather judge the product in front of us than the roadmap. Small annoyances compound it: a power cable permanently attached to the speaker, with no color-matched option, on a device sold in four colors.
The result is a good speaker and a promising assistant that hasn't arrived yet. If you want strong sound and a Thread border router for a hundred dollars, it delivers. If you were waiting for Google's cheap speaker to restock a guest room, that product no longer exists, and this isn't a substitute at twice the price.
