Amazon Alexa Tablet 12 Pro Review

Google Play access and a 120Hz 3:2 display make Amazon's Alexa Tablet 12 Pro its most credible productivity tablet yet, though the $499 price invites tougher competition.

3.5 / 5

Pros

  • + Full Google Play Store access, a first for an Amazon tablet
  • + 12-inch 3:2 display with 120Hz refresh and sharp 280 PPI
  • + Optional Nanomatte anti-glare display, bundled with 16GB RAM for about $50 more
  • + Dimensity 8400 chip, a step above the rest of the Alexa Tablet range
  • + Premium unibody aluminum build and four Dolby Atmos speakers
  • + Commitment to at least four years of software updates

Cons

  • − 500-nit peak brightness is modest at this price
  • − Only 128GB of storage listed
  • − Keyboard ($150) and stylus ($90) cost extra, inflating the total price
  • − Base model has 8GB RAM versus 16GB on the Nanomatte variant
  • − Value of deep Alexa Plus integration is unproven, and it may not suit non-Alexa users
  • − Battery life is a manufacturer claim not yet independently verified

The Alexa Tablet 12 Pro marks a real change of direction for Amazon. The Fire brand is gone, and for the first time an Amazon tablet runs Google-certified Android with the full Google Play Store. That removes the biggest objection to Amazon's tablets: a walled-off app catalogue. On paper, this is the first Amazon slate that can be judged as a general-purpose Android tablet rather than a cheap content-consumption device.

It also moves Amazon well out of its usual budget territory. At roughly $499, or about $550 for the Nanomatte version, it is pitched at people who want a large-screen Android tablet for media, browsing, light productivity and note-taking. It should especially appeal to anyone already using Alexa. The optional keyboard and stylus point to work-and-create ambitions.

A note on scope: this assessment is based on verified specifications and reported hands-on impressions, not our own long-term testing. Battery life, real-world performance and how useful Alexa's on-screen awareness proves day to day are still open questions.

The fundamentals look strong for the price.

  • Display: The 12-inch 3:2 panel with 120Hz refresh and 280 PPI suits reading, documents and split-screen work better than a widescreen tablet would.
  • Nanomatte option: This anti-glare, paperlike finish is a distinctive extra. Because it also doubles RAM from 8GB to 16GB for about $50 more, we consider it the better-value configuration.
  • Performance and build: The Dimensity 8400 is a clear step above the chip in the smaller Alexa Tablets. A unibody aluminum chassis and four Dolby Atmos speakers complete a package that finally feels premium.
  • Software support: Amazon promises at least four years of updates, launching on Android 16 with Android 17 due in early 2027. That is reassuring, though it is a single-source claim and not class-leading.

There are caveats.

  • Brightness: 500 nits of peak brightness is modest for a $500 tablet and may limit outdoor use. The matte panel could partly offset this.
  • Storage: 128GB is the only listed capacity, which may feel tight for heavy users.
  • Accessories: The keyboard ($150) and stylus ($90) push the productivity setup to nearly $800 with the Nanomatte model.
  • Alexa integration: Deep Alexa Plus integration with on-screen context is promising, but its usefulness is unproven. Users who don't want Alexa may find it intrusive.

Verdict: This is Amazon's most compelling tablet by a wide margin, and the move to full Google Play makes it a legitimate mid-to-premium Android option. Until we can verify battery life, brightness in practice and Alexa's real value, a solid but cautious 3.5 out of 5 feels right. Buyers should lean toward the Nanomatte/16GB model.
