MSI Claw A8 BZ2EM Review
MSI's first Ryzen Z2 Extreme handheld pairs a big, bright 120Hz screen with an 80Wh battery and generous 24GB/1TB configuration, but 850 pounds is a lot to pay for a plastic chassis and Windows 11's still-awkward touch experience.
Pros
- + Large, bright 8-inch 1920x1200 120Hz IPS panel with VRR
- + Strong 8-core Ryzen Z2 Extreme and Radeon 890M performance
- + Genuinely good battery life from the 80Wh cell - reportedly beats the ROG Xbox Ally X
- + Generous 24GB DDR5-8000 and 1TB Gen 4 SSD as standard
- + Hall Effect sticks and triggers should resist drift long-term
- + Excellent connectivity: dual USB4/Thunderbolt 4, Wi-Fi 7, microSD, fingerprint reader
- + Customisable rear buttons and 24-month warranty
Cons
- − 850 pounds is a lot, especially against an OLED rival sitting just above it
- − Plastic chassis throughout doesn't match the price
- − Windows 11 touch experience remains clunky despite Xbox Full Screen Experience
- − Ergonomics reportedly a step back from the Intel Claw 8 AI+
- − No carry case included
- − Reports of whiny fans, awkward M1/M2 button placement and missing MSI Center M software
- − Spotty US availability
The Claw A8 BZ2EM is MSI planting a flag: it's the first gaming handheld out of the gate with AMD's Ryzen Z2 Extreme, and the spec sheet reads like a company determined not to be undercut on substance. Eight Zen 5/Zen 5c cores, Radeon 890M graphics, 24GB of fast DDR5, a terabyte of Gen 4 storage and an 80Wh battery is a seriously well-stocked package, and the 8-inch 1920x1200 120Hz IPS panel with VRR gives the hardware somewhere worthwhile to put those frames.
Where it gets more interesting is the details MSI didn't have to include. Twin USB4/Thunderbolt 4 ports, Wi-Fi 7, a microSD slot, a fingerprint reader and Hall Effect sticks and triggers all point to a device meant to last a few years rather than win a single spec comparison. The two customisable rear buttons and RGB around the sticks are the fun bits; the Hall Effect sensors are the ones you'll appreciate in year three.
This is aimed at the PC gamer who wants a handheld that can also be a desk machine, docked over Thunderbolt, and who is comfortable living with Windows 11 on an 8-inch screen. It sits between the ROG Xbox Ally X and the OLED Legion Go 2 on price, and it ships with the new Xbox Full Screen Experience, which is doing a lot of heavy lifting to make Windows bearable here.
On raw capability this is one of the more convincing Windows handhelds going. The reviewer consensus is that the display is a genuine highlight - large, bright and punchy - and that battery life is solid, with IGN rating it as lasting longer than the Asus ROG Xbox Ally X despite the bigger chassis. Given an 80Wh cell and a 20W sustained power limit with 50W bursts, that tracks: MSI has sized the battery to match the silicon rather than hoping for the best.
The compromises are real, though. At 850 pounds it is expensive, and the chassis is plastic throughout, which is a hard sell at that money. Notebookcheck reckons ergonomics have gone backwards versus the Intel-powered Claw 8 AI+ despite the redesigned button layout and relocated fans, and there are recurring grumbles about whiny fans, awkward M1/M2 key placement and missing MSI Center M software - individually minor, collectively the sort of thing that nags. No carry case in the box on an 850 pound portable is a mean omission, and patchy US availability limits who can actually buy one. And no amount of Xbox Full Screen Experience polish fully fixes poking at Windows 11 with a fingertip.
The aggregate picture reflects that split: Notebookcheck's own review lands at 83.1% while its collected average across nine reviews is 74.37%, which is roughly where I'd put it too. This is strong, well-specified hardware let down by price and software friction rather than by anything fundamental. Buy it for the screen, the battery and the port selection; go elsewhere if you want OLED, a premium-feeling shell, or a handheld that doesn't ask you to manage an operating system.
