MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ (Arc G3 Extreme) Review

MSI's Claw 8 EX AI+ is the fastest Windows gaming handheld you can buy right now, thanks to Intel's new Panther Lake-based Arc G3 Extreme chip — but at $1,799 with an IPS screen, constant fan noise and real heft, it's a hard sell outside the enthusiast fringe.

4.0 / 5$1,799.00

Pros

  • + Fastest PC gaming handheld currently available, reportedly up to 55% ahead of the Legion Go 2
  • + Genuinely playable native 1200p gaming at medium-to-high settings
  • + Strong efficiency at lower wattages — near four hours in Cyberpunk 2077 with frame generation reported
  • + Generous spec as standard: 32GB LPDDR5X and a 1TB user-replaceable M.2-2280 SSD
  • + Excellent connectivity with two Thunderbolt 4 ports and a fast microSD Express reader
  • + Hall-effect sticks, good speakers and a redesigned, more comfortable chassis

Cons

  • − $1,799 in a single configuration — the most expensive handheld from a mainstream PC maker
  • − IPS panel only, with no OLED option, so image quality trails OLED rivals
  • − Noticeably heavy compared with other handhelds
  • − Fans run constantly, even at idle
  • − Wi-Fi 7 limited to 160 MHz
  • − Largely carries over the previous Claw's screen, battery, inputs and I/O for a much higher price

The Claw 8 EX AI+ is less a new handheld than a transplant: MSI has taken the bones of last year's Claw 8 AI+ — the same 8-inch 120 Hz screen, the same 80 Whr battery, the same Hall-effect sticks and generous I/O — and dropped in Intel's new Arc G3 Extreme silicon, with a reworked and reportedly more comfortable chassis around it. The result is a handheld that finally makes a Windows device feel like a genuine 1200p gaming machine rather than a 720p compromise box.

It arrives in exactly one flavour, at exactly one eye-watering price: $1,799 for 32GB of LPDDR5X and a 1TB replaceable M.2-2280 SSD. That buys you dual Thunderbolt 4, Wi-Fi 7, microSD Express and a genuinely well-rounded feature set, but it also puts this roughly double an ROG Ally X and close to triple a Steam Deck OLED. This is a device for the enthusiast who treats a handheld as their primary gaming PC, wants native-resolution frame rates without heavy upscaling, and has the budget to stop caring about value per dollar. Anyone shopping on price — or anyone who prizes OLED contrast over raw frames — should look elsewhere.

On performance, the verdict is unambiguous: this is the new high-water mark. Reviewers consistently call it the fastest PC handheld available, with figures as strong as 60-plus fps in demanding titles at native 1200p on medium-to-high settings and margins of up to 55% over the Lenovo Legion Go 2. More impressive than the peak numbers is the efficiency story — Cyberpunk 2077 at 1200p maximum details reported near 90 fps with frame generation and still close to four hours of runtime from the 80 Whr pack suggests Panther Lake holds up well when you dial the wattage back, which is where handhelds actually live.

The problems are everything around the chip. At this price, an IPS panel feels like a generation-old choice when rivals ship OLED, and reviewers are clear that it can't match them for subjective image quality. The device is noticeably heavy, the fans reportedly never stop spinning — even at idle — and the Wi-Fi 7 implementation is capped at 160 MHz. Because so much of the hardware is carried over from the previous Claw, owners of that model are essentially paying a large premium for the SoC and the chassis revision alone. With a comparable Legion Go 2 config landing at the same $1,799 and an ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X at $999, MSI is asking buyers to pay a flagship tax for a performance lead that most games don't strictly require.

I rate it 4 out of 5: the engineering and the silicon deserve applause, and if you simply want the fastest handheld in existence, this is it. But the display choice, the noise and the pricing keep it from being an easy recommendation rather than a specialist one.
