Amazon Kindle Scribe Colorsoft Review
Amazon's first color e-notebook is also its most polished and most expensive Kindle: a genuinely lovely 11-inch writing slate let down by soft 150 PPI color, no water resistance and a locked-down ecosystem. Worth it on sale, hard to justify at $629.99.
Pros
- + Excellent 300 PPI monochrome text on a large 11-inch panel
- + Scribe Pen included, never needs charging, with eraser, grip button and 10 spare tips
- + Rearchitected display stack nearly eliminates parallax when writing
- + New miniaturised-LED front light gives narrow bezels and even illumination
- + Texture-molded glass provides genuine pen friction
- + Slim and light for the screen size at 400 g and 5.4 mm
- + Sharp Oxide backplane enables faster colour transitions than previous colour e-paper
Cons
- − Amazon's most expensive Kindle ever at $629.99, a ~$130 premium over the mono Scribe
- − Colour renders at just 150 PPI and looks soft on detailed pages and covers
- − No water resistance
- − Storage fixed at purchase with no card slot
- − Walled garden blocks third-party reading apps
- − Mediocre built-in audiobook player
- − Onyx BOOX Note Air 5 C reportedly matches the panel and runs full Android for around $100 less
- − Wi-Fi 5 only
The Kindle Scribe Colorsoft is Amazon finally doing the thing colour e-paper fans have been asking for: an 11-inch Kaleido 3 panel in a Scribe body, with the pen in the box and none of the caveats about charging styluses or hunting down replacement tips. It arrived in December 2025 as the halo product of a rebuilt Scribe line, and it reads exactly like a halo product — miniaturised front-light LEDs for slimmer bezels, texture-molded glass that gives the nib something to bite into, a display stack reworked to kill off most of the parallax that makes writing on glass feel like writing through glass, and licensed Sharp Oxide backplane panels for faster, better-controlled colour transitions.
At 400 g and 5.4 mm it's a credible substitute for a paper notebook rather than a compromise, and the included Scribe Pen — eraser end, programmable grip button, magnetic side dock, ten spare tips — is the kind of accessory bundle that quietly justifies part of the price. This is aimed squarely at people who already live inside Kindle, mark up documents daily, and want colour highlighting and cover art without giving up 300 PPI text. It is not aimed at anyone shopping on value.
Everything good here is real, and so is the asking price. $629.99 for 32 GB and $679.99 for 64 GB makes this the most expensive Kindle Amazon has built — roughly $130 above the front-lit mono Scribe, $200 above the non-front-lit model, and about $230 above the outgoing 10.2-inch Scribe that's still floating around at $399. That's a steep premium for colour, and the colour itself is the weakest part of the package: 150 PPI is fine for highlighter strokes and chart fills, noticeably soft on detailed illustrations and book covers. Mono text at 300 PPI remains excellent, which rather underlines the question of who the extra $130 is for.
The other deductions are familiar Amazon ones. There's no water resistance on a $630 device you'll be tempted to read with in the bath. Storage is fixed at purchase with no card slot, so the 32 GB tier is a decision you live with. Third-party reading apps are locked out, and the built-in audiobook playback is competent rather than good despite Bluetooth 5.1 being there. Wi-Fi 5 is a little dated for a 2025 flagship. And the comparison reviewers keep reaching for stings: the Onyx BOOX Note Air 5 C reportedly matches the panel spec, runs full Android, and costs around $100 less — you trade polish and the Kindle library for openness.
The verdict, then, is the same one the wider press landed on: this is the best Kindle Amazon makes and hard to recommend at list price. If the hardware craft and the Kindle ecosystem matter more to you than the money, it delivers. Everyone else should wait for a discount or buy the mono Scribe and keep the difference.
