Lectron 40-Amp Portable Level 2 J1772 EV Charger
Lectron's portable Level 2 charger nails the budget brief: 40 amps, WiFi you can ignore, a carrying case and roughly 8 pounds of travel weight for around $230. The short 16-foot cable and the missing UL/ETL listing on the older model keep it out of top-tier territory.
Pros
- + Strong value for a 40-amp Level 2 unit at roughly $230–$238
- + WiFi and app are genuinely optional — works the moment you plug it in
- + Light for its class at about 8 pounds with the 14-50 adapter
- + Ships with a compact suitcase-style carrying case, ideal for road trips
- + Sturdy feel: dense plastics and a metal release button on the handle
- + Available with J1772 or NACS handles and various plug types
- + Simple LED status readout keeps cost down without hurting usability
Cons
- − 16-foot cable is short next to 20- and 25-foot rivals
- − Level 1/Level 2 model reviewed was neither UL nor ETL listed
- − Advertised 16 A Level 1 rate didn't match the measured 12 A on that model
- − Slight play between the adapters and the power box when tugged
- − No display — LED only, so no at-a-glance charging data
- − Confusing line-up and inconsistent pricing; the combined Level 1/Level 2 cable has been discontinued
Lectron's portable Level 2 cable is aimed squarely at the EV owner who doesn't want to pay an electrician to hard-wire a wall box. If you already have a NEMA 14-50 outlet in the garage — or you expect to find one at a cabin, a campsite pedestal or a relative's house — this is the kind of product that turns that outlet into a real charger and then packs back into its suitcase-style case when you're done.
First impressions are of a product that has been costed carefully rather than cheaply. There's no screen, just an LED that cascades green while charging, and that's a trade we'd make happily at this price. The 40-amp J1772 version does include WiFi and an app, but crucially you can plug it in and charge without ever creating an account — a refreshing stance in a category that increasingly treats connectivity as mandatory. Build quality reads as sturdy, with dense plastics and a metal release button, and at roughly eight pounds with the 14-50 adapter fitted it's genuinely portable for a 40-amp unit.
This is for budget-conscious and travel-minded drivers, and for anyone who wants a backup to a permanent home charger. It is not for someone who wants the longest cable or the most reassuring paperwork.
Judged as a value buy, this does the job. The 40-amp Level 2 model's roughly $230–$238 asking price undercuts plenty of fixed wall units while delivering the same practical outcome, and the optional-app approach plus included carrying case show someone thought about how people actually live with these things. Lectron also offers J1772 and NACS handle versions and multiple plug types, so most garages and most cars are covered.
Two things hold it back. The 16-foot cable is noticeably shorter than the 20- and 25-foot competitors, and cable length is the spec buyers most often regret — measure from your outlet to your charge port before ordering. More seriously, the Level 1/Level 2 model reviewed in 2023 was not UL or ETL listed, which is hard to wave away on a high-current device plugged into a 240-volt circuit and sold for over $300. That same unit also charged at 12 amps on 120 volts despite packaging claiming 16, which is a documentation sloppiness we'd rather not see on electrical equipment. We have no certification data for the current 40-amp model, so we can't credit it with an improvement.
A note on confidence: much of what we know here comes from a handful of reviews of different Lectron variants at different times, and pricing has shifted between $230 and $310 depending on version and source. Treat this as a solid recommendation for the 40-amp Level 2 unit specifically, with the caveat that the line-up is a moving target.
Rating: 3.5 out of 5 — a smart, light, honestly priced portable charger with one measurable limitation and one unresolved question.
